Course Description: Join herbalist and teacher Brooke Kelly for a truly unique level two herbalism program learning both sacred and medicinal herbal practices. While most schools primarily focus on the clinical side of herbalism, Brooke Kelly blends spiritual practice with botany and a strong focus on the old traditional ways of herbalism. Each month we will meet for one Saturday 1-6pm for a total of ten months. Together we will dig deeper into botany and how to recognize plant signatures, such as how the heart shape leaf of a violet indicates that it holds healing properties for the heart. We will also take a closer look at herbal actions and constituents, learning which herbs are best suited for common ailments. We will explore the traditional ways plants were and are still used such as plant meditations, tea leaf reading, gardening/harvesting by moon phases, spiritual bathing, and the connections herbs have with different elements, along with getting in touch with nature through plant walks, identification, foraging and making preparations and medicines from the herbs we gather. Handouts will be provided.
Provided Materials: Handouts will be provided along with some samples of herbs and materials needed for in-class projects. Materials Not Provided: You will need to bring to class a large 2 inch three ring binder with a clear sleeve cover, 6 divider tabs (References, Case Studies, Materia Medica, Botany, Traditions, Home-Work), writing utensils, colored pencils, flash cards and notepaper. You will also need to get a bound sketch or notebook (at least 110 sheets or 220 pages) to use for your Materia Medica. If you would like and have enough space remaining, you may also use the sketch book you used in level one for your Materia Medica. Lunch, snacks and beverages should be brought to every class. Materials needed for homework projects are your responsibility. Herbs will be available for purchase via request for each class. If you did not take Brooke's level one program, you will also need a copy of "The Herb Book" by John Lust to bring with you to each class. Please also consider bringing your binder & Materia Medica from level one.
Homework/Certificate Requirements: For homework each month you will be asked to keep a Materia Medica of 8 plants per month as well as practice using herbs for different problems. There may also be some light reading and writing response.
