Class Description: Join Brooke Kelly once per month to learn the fundamentals of herbalism. No prior knowledge is necessary. You will have hands on learning experience along with reading materials, projects, and fun homework assignments. Study a different system of the body each month along with their corresponding herbal remedies. Enjoy plant walks while learning how to positively identify medicinal herbs, as well as how to forage and harvest! Throughout each month you will learn how to mix teas, blend oils, make medicine and other herbal products for you and your loved ones. All the while you will build your knowledge by keeping a personal Materia Medica (collection of knowledge) on plants. At the end of this program, when you have completed all assignments, you will receive an Herbalism: Finding Your Roots Level One Certificate of Completion.
Objective: I honestly believe herbal education is for everyone; from children stopping a toothache with plantain, a mother increasing her breast milk with raspberry leaf, a friend helping a friend fight allergies with mullein, to the herbalist practicing in a clinical setting meeting with a variety of patients and helping them to heal with all-natural remedies. By the completion of this course each student will have an introductory understanding of what herbalism is and where their studies can lead to. This course will open your understanding to medicinal properties of herbs and how you can begin to apply using them for yourselves and loved ones. Many of you will use this knowledge to begin living a more organic life, caring for yourself and loved ones while others may use this course as their first stepping stone to go on to other herbal programs and apprenticeships to study herbal medicine in-depth and to potentially one day practice in a clinical setting.
Texts & Provided Materials: Handouts will be provided along with the following textbooks: The Herb Book by John Lust. Samples of herbs and materials needed for in-class projects will also be provided during each class.
Materials Not Provided: You will need to bring to class a large 2 inch three ring binder with a clear sleeve cover, 6 divider tabs, writing utensils, colored pencils, flashcards and notepaper. You will also need to get a bound sketch or notebook (at least 110 sheets or 220 pages) to use for your Materia Medica. Lunch, snacks and beverages should be brought to every class. Materials needed for homework projects are your responsibility. Herbs will be available for purchase via request for each class.
Certificate Requirements: In order to receive your Herbalism: Finding Your Roots Level One Certificate of Completion you must complete all Materia Medica and homework assignments. That being said, if you just want to learn but are not interested in receiving a certificate you need only attend classes. However, I strongly advise you to complete all homework and especially the Materia Medica to attain a fuller and greater understanding of the information covered during the herbalism program. Also, no more than 2 classes may be missed.
Materia Medica: A materia medica is a personal collection of knowledge based on medicinal herbs and plants. I require that your Materia Medica is hand-written. It has been proven scientifically countless times that information written by hand is better remembered than information typed or copied and pasted.
Each month you will receive a list of 5 plants corresponding to the particular body system we are focusing on for that month. In addition, you will also be responsible for finding and adding 3 more herbs that I have not listed that correspond with the focus that month, resulting in a total of 8 herbs to research and study.
I strongly recommend writing about one herb per day to not only break up the research but to also help you better remember each plant.
In your Materia Medica you must include: a photo or drawing of the plant, common name, Botanical name, plant family, medicinal properties, precautions, personal notes, and resources.
Please try to use at least 2 to 3 resources for each plant you research. The Herb Book may count as one of them.
A table of contents for each month with page numbers for each herb is also required in the front of each section.
If you would like to add additional plants and/or notes to your Materia Medica, feel free to but please do not overwhelm yourself by adding too much work.
Skullcap Common Names: Skullcap/Scullcap, blue pimpernel, helmet flower, hoodwort, mad-dog-weed, side flowering skullcap Latin Name: Scutellaria Lateriflora Family: Lamiaceae Medicinal Properties: Anxiety, Diuretic, Sedative, Insomnia, tonic, Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Antispasmodic Precautions: May cause drowsiness and promote menstruation Personal Notes: It is recommended to use Scullcap over a long period of time to receive the full benefits. Resources: A18, C356, D45-47
Homework: Again, your Materia Medica is your priority, but you will still be expected to complete all other assignments. Each section should only take about a half hour to an hour at most to complete.
Terminology > Each month you will be given a list of terms to learn. For each word please give a textbook definition, then re-write the definition in your own words, and provide 3 examples.
Project > Each month you will be asked to make something at home based off of our previous class. This could include anything from mixing a medicinal tea, making a salve, or even writing out what you might do for a particular ailment (or a need you or a loved one may have).
Critical Thinking > Each month I will share a short video or article with you to read or watch or a particular writing prompt. If a video or article is given, please give me your thoughts and feelings on it. Did it inspire you? Did you learn something new? Do you agree or disagree? This writing assignment can be anything from a couple of short sentences to a full page depending on how you feel about the topic.
